Like tides in the oceans have large waves encompassing smaller waves enclosing tiny waves and ripples.

For example, dividends of companies fluctuate between low dividends to high dividends while riding over a larger longer tide.  See how company dividends have performed between 1930’s to 2010’s.

Also, keep this picture of cycles within cycles in mind.

The difference between the top graph that shows increasing value and the bottom showing up and down moves, is that the bottom accounts for inflation and the top one does not.  Using a year-to-year percentage change graph will also provide a graph that shows the distinct cyclical differences from one period to the other period.
